Growing up music was always in my life, i started playing instuments at seven and i was writing songs at thirteen. Along with Frederick Douglass, Garnet was considered to be the most prominent African-American leader during the abolitionist movement. Some slaves had obtaind their freedom as a result of the Emancipation Proclamation. But the majority were still held in bondage. So the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment brought great excitement to those who had carried on a long determined struggle to end slavery. Garnet's speech before Congress captured excitement. He had been invited to speak as a part of the anniversary celebration of the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. He was the first African American to speak before Congress. On December 18, 1865, after the required number of states had approved it, the Thirteenth Amendment became a part of United States Constitution.
