J-Twist, born Jason Ortiz, half Puerto Rican and half Argentinan, hails from the streets of Far Rockaway Queens, a rough area that has bred the likes of some well known artists such as MC Serch, Father MC, and the late Stack Bundles just to name a few. Jason was just like many kids growing up in any rough area, idolizing his favorite rappers and dreaming to one day make it big like they had. He realized his dream could be within reach when he met his future partner in rhyme DJ L.A.M.
DJ L.A.M. is the founder of Ovakil Productions. A label that saw the birth and evolution of J- Twist. Ovakil consisted of a team of all Far Rockaway rappers devoted to being true lyricists above all else. Labelmates consisted of DJ L.A.M., Lord Hades, Sicko, Black Lion, Hatian Man and super producer Quest.
At the age of 21, Twist linked up with the world famous MC Serch formerly of the rap group 3rd Bass and host of VH1's "White Rapper Show".
At that same time Twist had also started attending NYC's Institute of Audio Research better known as IAR, to become a recording engineer with the hopes of securing his role in the music industry. While attending IAR, Serch offered Twist a job with his "Serchlite" indy company. J-Twist had worked for the company for a short while during which he was blessed with a newborn son on March 16th 2003.
Shortly after his son was born Twist decided to leave Serchlite so he could better provide for his new family. Now working a full time job, Twist was also dealing with the stress of his Ovakil team disbandng at the same time with each person going their seperate ways. Some relocated to other states and some seemed to have given upon the label completely. As a result of all this, Twist had decided to put his rap career on the back burner while he worked and spent all of his free time with his wife and kid.
This seemed to be his routine until 2007. Twist, although gave up trying to make it as a rapper, never gave up rapping. Twist would always be ready to step into a cipher and showcase his skills as an emcee. This proved to be useful as his younger brother, up and coming rapper "Phame" was always around him and had been motivated to carry on the dream of making it to the big stage. Phame introduced Twist to DJ Neddy in 2007 and the two hit it off right away. DJ Neddy, founder of Ground Zero Project a.k.a. GZP, had a spot ready for him at the label and twist was ready to get back in the game. J-Twist would later join GZP as a solo artist and be featured on tracks with GZP's hottest group "Live Rounds". Live Rounds, one of New Yorks hottest up and coming groups consists of Phame, Psyclone and Au-Fait. Together with DJ Neddy, the possibilities seemed to be endless and Twist was re-born.
Twist is the next big thing at GZP and has been working on a new project since his arrival. He still looks to his long time friends DJ L.A.M. and Quest for their insights and production skills always keeping his Ovakil family in mind. You can be sure that 2008 will prove to be the year that Twist gets the exposure that he deserves. Look out for his yet to be titled debut under the GZP label gauranteed to be a smash hit, with a little something in it for everyone to enjoy.
