Born and raised in the Badlands sector of North Philadelphia, Jessica was always a huge fan of hip hop since Rakim was spitting “I know you got soul,” Master Ace was “Born to Roll,” and Run DMC made us all “Walk this way” and to fast forward a bit there was the birth of Nas.
She became obsessed with hip hop as the years progressed. She began writing at the age of 17 after listening to her now boyfriend, Dezzet rapping, who like herself, grew a deep appreciation for the true art form of hip hop. Authoring poetry since the tender age of 10, the challenge of drafting lyrics proved her to be a true natural. Initially, she viewed this art as a hobby, since she was so skeptical about being recognized in the music industry, given the male domination of hip hop and the fact that the existence of talented female rappers was so infrequent at the time. Thus, it was her drive to exhibit her talent and show her peers how capable she was of raising the bar lyrically that led her to pursue her dream, especially, since very few female rappers are able to flourish in this field.
She had been inspired by so many genres of music, predominantly hip hop, however, her environment played a significant role. Although everyday struggles became more of a burden and threatened the lives of those she loved dearly, she remained focused and to the dismay of many, she succeeded the unfortunate circumstances which kept her confined to herself. Up until 2005, her urge to write lyrics was at best sporadic. After being heard by others outside her immediate circle, people began inquiring as to whether she would be releasing a solo project.
In late 2005, she began recording with S.U.P. and made Evialicer Records her home. She adopted the name, Jess Blayze, which basically speaks for itself given her undeniable ability to spit pure fire on a track. To date, she has performed in venues such as the legendary Five Spot, Club Xandu, Club Diesel and has been added to the line-up for the Rags II Riches III show which is being presented by the BZ Ballers Club residing in North Philadelphia. Considering the authenticity and creativity which so heavily influenced her as an artist, she is a strong believer that one cannot gain credibility or respect, for that matter, if the artist isn’t responsible for creating his/her own music. She stands by this notion and therefore writes 100% of her lyrics. The mixtape which is due out on March 9, 2007 is titled “26 Counts of Murder” and is highly anticipated and considered true classic material. With production from S.U.P. as well as No Joke, she surpassed expectations and continues to astonish listeners as well as fellow artists gaining the respect of many internationally. True talent cannot be ignored and thus she is perceived as one of the hottest lyrical female rappers of our time.
